Job Description

General Description:

The Industrial Controls and Automation Engineer develops industrial control systems and automation logic. Controls and automation engineers will directly interact with engineers from other disciplines, project managers, and customers as projects move from the preliminary design phase to complete, operational, systems.

Reports to: Director of Projects


  1. Developing and reviewing electrical schematics and instrumentation drawings (P&ID)
  2. Programming industrial programmable logic controllers (PLCs)
  3. Optimizing and tuning automatic control systems (PID controllers)
  4. Developing graphical interfaces for industrial control systems (HMIs) 
  5. Supporting project management efforts as controls expert during design reviews
  6. Interfacing with client quality control personnel
  7. Developing operations manuals, maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting guides for industrial control and instrumentation systems
  8. Training and advising client operations personnel in safe and efficient operation of company products
  9. Providing integration and troubleshooting support at project sites 
  10. Interacting with internal sales team to evaluate potential project requirements

Job Requirements

Minimum Educational Qualifications:

  • Associate Degree or Certificate in Industrial Controls Technology, Industrial Electrical Technology, Instrumentation Technology, or equivalent

Minimum Previous Experience:

  • 3 years experience in industrial controls and PLC programming
  • Experience with industrial instrumentation and sensors: process transmitters, valves, switches
  • Experience with 2D CAD software: AutoCAD
  • Experience with Microsoft Office

Preferred Previous Experience:

  • Experience with Allen-Bradley, Siemens, and Schneider Electric (Triconex) industrial control products
  • Experience with 3D CAD software: Inventor, Pro/Engineer, SolidWorks, NX, CATIA
  • Familiarity with industrial instrumentation and electrical design standards (NEC, NFPA, UL)
  • Experience with Burner Management Systems (BMS)

  • Ability to independently establish goals and schedules
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others both inside and outside the organization
  • Willingness to travel twenty percent (20%) of the year
