Job Description

General Description:

The Mechanical Design Supervisor leads a team of mechanical designers and drafters who utilize manual methods and computer-aided drafting programs to translate design information and specifications from engineers into schematics, technical drawings and production plans.

Reports to: Director of Projects


  1. Leads a team responsible for creating technical drawings, manufacturing schematics, and digital models of mechanical equipment designs, using measurements, specifications and data from engineering team
  2. Collecting initial drawings, calculations, and design ideas from engineers, and combining all relevant data into coherent and complete initial design models
  3. Coordinating with engineers and project managers to understand project requirements, verifying design details, and recommending modifications as needed according to company standards and best practices
  4. Reviewing technical drawings and schematics for accuracy, detail, manufacturing feasibility, and conformance to project and company standards
  5. Manages departmental performance measures, including productivity and quality controls, and providing regular progress reports to the Director of Projects.
  6. Manages department priorities by providing leadership through a 14-day (minimum) planning cycle.
  7. Communicating with manufacturing personnel to create detailed layouts prior to production, and assisting in the design, creation, and testing of prototypes
  8. Supports Quality Control in analyzing causes of nonconformity with product specifications
  9. Supports Human Resources in tracking absenteeism and timekeeping of subordinates
  10. Ensures effective subordinate employee relations by providing employee coaching and development and resolving employee issues through problem resolution
  11. Confers with the Director of Projects to establish design document standards
  12. Assist in efforts to standardize and unify design document standards by participating in meetings and preparing presentation materials as necessary
  13. Serves as an expert and technical resource in mechanical design and drafting and technologies processes for employees

Job Requirements

Minimum Educational Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Associate's degree in drafting or equivalent work experience and training 

Minimum Previous Experience:

  • 10 years work experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Knowledge in 2D AutoCAD design
  • Knowledge in 3D design software
