Job Description

The Principal Research Engineer executes a variety of highly specialized/ technical, business development and leadership activities. This individual provides advanced expertise in the areas of flight dynamics, control, and related fields. This person submits government proposals including SBIR/STTR, NRA and BAA proposals, and is involved in commercial client outreach via networking at conferences and meetings and writing statements of work for commercial consulting contracts. The Principal Research Engineer also manages multiple contracts that involve tracking budgets, ensuring successful deliverables, and managing several less experienced engineers. This person actively engages in company process development and participates in BD related activities. This individual may supervise, and mentor select staff engineers. Reports to Director of Engineering Services

Supports determining top level technical direction in alignment with company vision including short term and long-term goals.
Along with Engineering Management, defines technical focal point of Business development areas and directs deep technical activities.
Serves as Principal Investigator (PI) on select commercial and government programs
Performs all tasks with consistency, accuracy, and attention to detail.
Oversees the development of new IP, candidate products, and technical initiatives including executing beyond Phase II for SBIR programs.
Manages multiple contracts that involve tracking budgets, ensuring successful deliverables, and managing several engineers.
Develops test protocols/procedures, collects and analyzes data, and creates detailed reports.
*  Prepares project plans, schedules, and budgets.
Oversees and executes on technical projects and activities while remaining within established schedule and budget constraints.
Communicates with customers in the course of completing assigned technical work.
Supports, identifies, and secures new business in technical area of expertise and related areas that meet Business Development goals.
Submits proposals and writes statements of work for commercial consulting and government contracts.
Builds and maintains relationships with technical decision makers.
Participate in marketing campaigns that align with company objectives.
Supports marketing campaigns (conferences, trade shows, etc.)
Creates white-papers and other technical marketing material and presents at selected professional conferences, seminars.
Presents at selected technical meetings and conferences.
Sets goals and objectives for selected staff engineers that align with company strategy to inspire, motivate and produce results.
Supports an effective employee selection, hiring, onboarding and professional development process.
Manages talent performance through coaching, positive communication, consistent feedback, one to ones and team meetings resulting in improved performance.
Ensures all Company timelines are met for processes, trainings and initiatives.
Participates in Company sponsored events.
Maintains project files and appropriate records of work, compliant with company and aerospace industry standards, practices, and regulations.

  • Bachelor of Science Degree and Master of Science Degree in Engineering with 10+ years of experience or Ph.D. with 5 yrs experience in Electrical, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering or Applied Mathematics or equivalent field.
  • Proven technical ability and experience in dynamics and controls theory or related discipline/field
  • Extensive flight test experience and skillset for assessing vehicle performance, flying, and handling qualities and related system performance.
  • Familiarity with Part 23, Part 25, Part 27 and/or other related FAA or similar EASA requirements.
  • Experience with stability and control system design and assessment
  • Strong skills with MATLAB/Simulink, Python, or equivalent. Working knowledge of C/C++ a plus.
  • Experience in aerospace industry required. UAS / UAM experience a plus.
  • Prioritization, time management, relationship building, and attention to detail.
  • Detail-oriented with strong, written, verbal, interpersonal, organizational, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to adapt, be flexible, and multi-task.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to forecast, create, and manage budgets

  • Track record of revenue generating activities in government or commercial consulting services
