OVERVIEW
The Principal Research Engineer executes a variety of highly specialized/ technical, business development and leadership activities. This individual provides advanced expertise in the areas of flight dynamics, control, and related fields. This person submits government proposals including SBIR/STTR, NRA and BAA proposals, and is involved in commercial client outreach via networking at conferences and meetings and writing statements of work for commercial consulting contracts. The Principal Research Engineer also manages multiple contracts that involve tracking budgets, ensuring successful deliverables, and managing several less experienced engineers. This person actively engages in company process development and participates in BD related activities. This individual may supervise, and mentor select staff engineers. DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
* Supports determining top level technical direction in alignment with company vision including short term and long-term goals.
* Along with Engineering Management, defines technical focal point of Business development areas and directs deep technical activities.
* Serves as Principal Investigator (PI) on select commercial and government programs
* Performs all tasks with consistency, accuracy, and attention to detail.
* Oversees the development of new IP, candidate products, and technical initiatives including executing beyond Phase II for SBIR programs.
* Manages multiple contracts that involve tracking budgets, ensuring successful deliverables, and managing several engineers.
* Develops test protocols/procedures, collects and analyzes data, and creates detailed reports.
* Prepares project plans, schedules, and budgets.
* Oversees and executes on technical projects and activities while remaining within established schedule and budget constraints.
* Communicates with customers in the course of completing assigned technical work.
* Supports, identifies, and secures new business in technical area of expertise and related areas that meet Business Development goals.
* Submits proposals and writes statements of work for commercial consulting and government contracts.
* Builds and maintains relationships with technical decision makers.
* Participate in marketing campaigns that align with company objectives.
* Supports marketing campaigns (conferences, trade shows, etc.)
* Creates white-papers and other technical marketing material and presents at selected professional conferences, seminars.
* Presents at selected technical meetings and conferences.
* Sets goals and objectives for selected staff engineers that align with company strategy to inspire, motivate and produce results.
* Supports an effective employee selection, hiring, onboarding and professional development process.
* Manages talent performance through coaching, positive communication, consistent feedback, one to ones and team meetings resulting in improved performance.
* Ensures all Company timelines are met for processes, trainings and initiatives.
* Participates in Company sponsored events.
* Maintains project files and appropriate records of work, compliant with company and aerospace industry standards, practices, and regulations.
* Performs other duties as assigned.
