Charting Your New Employee’s Course

Once upon a time, we chartered a sailboat with some friends and set sail one night from Florida for the tiny island of Bimini in the Caribbean. We knew nothing about sailing, but our friend Shawn, an experienced sailor, charted the course. We breezed quietly through the dark, taking turns holding the wheel on course throughout the night. In the dawn, to our amazement, in spite of all the variables, we reached that little speck of earth in the middle of the ocean. Shawn’s calculations were dead-on.

As a leader, you have the ability to set the course for your new employee’s journey with your organization. But what are the crucial elements of orienting your employee for success? Here’s a taste of the tips in store for you:

New employees are tentative, nervous, and tend to make mistakes; it comes with the territory. So it may seem harsh or unfair to correct or critique, but if you don’t, you lose the opportunity to set the right tone.
