Job Description

SUMMARY: 

The Materials & Processes Engineer assumes the lead role in the development of new products, implementation of product improvements and resolving production issues. Responsible for evaluating materials and developing machinery and processes to manufacture materials for use in products that must meet specialized design and performance specifications. Conducts research to develop new uses for known materials including those working with composite materials, metal and metal alloys, ceramics and glass, plastics and polymers, and naturally occurring materials.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Analyze product failure data and laboratory test results in order to determine causes of problems and developing solutions.

  • Conduct or supervise tests on raw materials or finished products in order to ensure their quality.

  • Design and direct the testing and/or control of processing procedures.

  • Determine appropriate methods for fabricating and joining materials.

  • Evaluate technical specifications and economic factors relating to process or product design objectives.

  • Monitor material performance and evaluate material deterioration.

  • Plan and implement laboratory operations for the purpose of developing material and fabrication procedures that meet cost, product specification, and performance standards.

  • Review new product plans and make recommendations for material selection based on design objectives, such as strength, weight, heat resistance, electrical conductivity, and cost.

  • Solve problems in a number of engineering fields, such as mechanical, chemical, electrical, civil, nuclear and aerospace.

  • Supervise production and testing processes in industrial settings such as metal refining facilities, smelting or foundry operations, or non-metallic materials production operations.

  • Conduct training sessions on new material products, applications, or manufacturing methods for colleagues.

  • Design processing plants and equipment. 

  • Guide technical staff engaged in selecting materials for specific uses in projected products or devices. 

  • Modify properties of metal alloys, using thermal and mechanical treatments.

  • Prepare proposals and budgets, analyzing labor costs, and writing reports.

  • Plan and evaluate new projects, consulting with other engineers and corporate executives as necessary.

  • Write for technical magazines, journals, and trade association publications.

  • Lead process improvement and cost reduction projects.

  • Assure compliance to ISO process and procedural requirements.

  • Occasionally travel to customer sites to represent the company.

  • Mentor and coach junior staff members.

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing, with coworkers and customers.

  • Ability to establish priorities, organize work and establish accountabilities.

  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.

  • Knowledge of applicable engineering theory, methods and practices.

  • Ability to apply sound engineering principles to the solution of routine technical problems; perform complex mathematical and engineering calculations; handle multiple priorities, detailed work to meet project deadlines.

  • Possess excellent communication skills both verbal and written, to support effective correspondence with internal as well as external customers; and the ability to read and interpret blueprints/specifications, technical writing.

  • Experience in supplier and customer interaction; project management experience including budget and team responsibilities.

  • Knowledge of computer assisted engineering and design software and equipment to prepare engineering and design documents such as Autodesk Inventor, Autocad, Solidworks, CFDesign, NASGRO, Algor and Cosmos for analysis; must be proficient in MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Project; and also have the ability to interpret FEA and CFD analyses.

  • Knowledge of standard machine shop practices.

  • Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.

  • Must be able to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level.

 


EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

BS Degree in Metallurgy or Materials Engineering; other relevant degrees will be considered from a four-year college or university; minimum of ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. An advanced degree in engineering is highly desirable.
