Benefits of a Small Business Culture

As a small business owner, do you ever feel like the underdog? Compared to larger commercial companies, you can’t afford to pull out all the stops in your budget to offer huge perks that will attract top candidates.

Well, cheer up! Your small business may be just who some candidates want to work for, says Scott Kuethen, Amtec’s CEO. “Smaller employers attract and appeal to individuals (Gen X & Y) who specifically don’t want to be part of a homogenized “corporate” environment. For most younger workers, meaningful work is essential. Most reject the idea that stable work is enough. They want to belong to something important.”

So what makes your business something special? It’s not just the perks you can offer, although those certainly don’t hurt! (Read about some great perks ideas here.) “All businesses can find meaning in the work they do,” says Kuethen. “But many don’t think about this. When the firm or company thinks about the meaningfulness of their work, they create a reason for employees to stay and make a real contribution that goes beyond just showing up for work. As a professional recruiting company, we’re very fortunate in that our service offerings are all centered around helping individuals in their careers and helping our clients build their teams. This is very meaningful work for our team.”

How does your company uniquely and positively contribute to the world around you? Are you giving your employees a reason to stay that goes beyond their wages and benefits? It could be that your company manufactures a medical part that saves babies’ lives. Or perhaps your company makes exercise equipment that helps people live a more healthy lifestyle. One company we know offers its employees opportunities to work in teams to fundraise for charities. Here at Amtec, we offer our employees an extra week off to participate in a service opportunity such as a kids’ summer camp. Every company does or can create something uniquely meaningful. If you haven’t yet made meaning a part of your company brand, start working on it today!

At Amtec, we’re very committed to helping our loyal customers deal with their HR challenges. One of the biggest issues for 2013 is the pending Affordable Care Act (ACA). Even though we don’t deal with insurance, we’ve found some great information that we want to make available to you. On July 11, 2013, at 12 noon PDT, we will be offering a webinar, led by Glen Ellsworth of Essential StaffCare, on Healthcare Reform…Play or Pay? To register, click here. Please note that attendance is limited to the first 100 attendees.
